Abstract
Department of Physiology The University of Texas Health science Center 7703 Floyd Curl Drive San Antonio, TX 78284-7756, USA / On leave from Sangju National Polytechnic University, Sangju, Korea The notion that metabolic rate determines life span has a long and controversial history. The basic tenet promoting this controversy relates to the assumption that an organism¡¯s lifetime energy expenditure limits life span. Originally proposed by Pearl and later formalized as the "rate of living" theory, this outdated, unsubstantiated notion has become unfortunately linked by some researchers to the "free radical theory of aging." The attempt to join these two theories has only led to further confusion and misinterpretations of both these aging theories. This review discusses some of the fallacies and unsound used to support the metabolic theory of aging in its relation to the free radical theory of aging.
